Calgary or Edmonton Area | Full-Time, Permanent | Field-Based/Flexible Remote

Black Fly Environmental is seeking an Intermediate Wildlife Biologist to join our multidisciplinary biophysical team.

We're looking for a capable wildlife consultant and field leader who has moved beyond entry-level fieldwork and is ready to take greater ownership of field programs, mentor junior staff and contribute directly to defensible technical deliverables. The successful candidate will bring the right combination of technical capability, practical field judgement, professionalism and a positive, collaborative attitude.

This is primarily a field-based role, supporting wildlife programs across the varied landscapes of Western Canada and the North. When not in the field, Black Fly offers fully remote work arrangements, with occasional travel to company offices as required.

The Position

Your primary focus will include:

·      Leading and conducting pre-construction wildlife sweeps for linear and site-based resource development projects, including the identification, assessment and documentation of wildlife habitat features

·      Acting as crew lead on assigned field programs and taking ownership of field preparation, on-site logistics, safe and efficient execution, data quality and junior staff mentorship

·      Conducting breeding bird and herptile surveys, pre-disturbance nest surveys, nest monitoring, species-specific surveys, bat surveys, and wildlife and herptile capture and relocation

·      Delineating and establishing appropriate buffers around active wildlife features, including migratory bird nests, stick nests, dens and mineral licks

·      Assisting senior biologists and project managers with field program design and planning

·      Collecting, managing and interpreting field data in accordance with Black Fly's technical and quality standards

·      Contributing to technical reports, environmental field reports, wildlife load forms, impact and effects assessments, regulatory submissions and permit applications

·      Supporting environmental monitoring on active construction sites, including pre-clearing wildlife sweeps, practical mitigation planning and communication with construction personnel

·      Working closely with project managers, clients, Indigenous participants and field crews to deliver programs safely, responsibly, on schedule and within scope

·      Contributing to Black Fly's strong safety culture by arriving prepared, exercising sound field judgement and consistently following company health and safety requirements

About you

You are accountable, safety-minded and confident leading people in the field. You work well independently, communicate clearly with clients and project teams, and remain practical and solutions-focused when field conditions or project needs change.

Ideally, you bring:

·      A B.Sc. in biology, ecology, wildlife management, environmental science or a related discipline

·      Approximately three to seven years of relevant wildlife consulting experience, preferably in Alberta, British Columbia or North of 60

·      Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) and/or Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) designation in good standing, or eligibility for registration

·      Working knowledge of applicable federal and provincial wildlife legislation and regulatory requirements, including the Migratory Birds Convention Act, Species at Risk Act, provincial wildlife legislation and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act

·      Field experience completing pre-construction wildlife sweeps, breeding bird and herptile surveys, nest monitoring and species-specific surveys in Prairie and Boreal ecosystems

·      Working knowledge of the Wildlife Sweep Protocol and experience preparing and submitting wildlife load forms in Alberta and/or British Columbia

·      Strong technical writing skills and experience contributing to reports, regulatory submissions and other client deliverables

·      The ability to communicate clearly and work constructively with clients, construction personnel, Indigenous participants and multidisciplinary project teams

·      A valid Class 5 driver's licence and clean driving record

·      Current standard field safety certifications, such as First Aid, H2S Alive and CSTS, considered an asset

·      The ability and willingness to work independently and collaboratively in remote, physically demanding and variable field conditions

Our field programs can take you into remote and challenging environments. You should be comfortable with rotational field work, extensive travel, long field days, variable weather and working safely in wildlife country.
