Environmental Scientist

  • Due to continuing growth, we are seeking an Environmental Scientist with experience to join our team in our Edmonton, AB office. A remote office location will also be considered. Black Fly offers an excellent opportunity for those in the environmental field to advance their careers within the environmental consulting industry.     In this position as an Environmental Scientist, you will be responsible for performing duties as a field representative, including instream construction monitoring; fish salvage and rescue; invasive weed surveys; wetland delineations; rare plant surveys; wildlife surveys; collecting field data and samples; monitoring construction sites, compiling data, and preparing reports.

    Specifically, you will:

    · Conduct plant and wildlife surveys for habitat assessments, special-status species, and other project requirements.

    · Conduct fish habitat assessments and fish salvage activities.

    · Conduct wetland delineations, jurisdictional determinations, and other aquatic resource surveys using current agency protocols, regionally specific methods, and other guidance.

    · Provide biological monitoring and oversight for construction projects, restoration and reclamation implementation and maintenance.

    · Research regional specific natural resources, survey requirements, and reporting needs.

    · Prepare reports documenting field investigations and analytical results.

    · Complete provincial loadform data submission for wildlife and fish survey inventories.

  • · Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Wildlife, Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, Reclamation, or a closely related field.

    · A minimum 2 years of biological experience working in the Canadian natural resource sector.

    · Ability to obtain your professional designation in Alberta or British Columbia as a professional Biologist (P.Biol or RPBio)

    · Knowledge of environmental policy and regulations and how they apply to industrial development activities in western Canada, including AER and AEP.

    · Field experience with ability to travel to job sites in remote locations including shift work which may include evenings and/or weekends.

    · The ability to work long days in a field setting (12hrs)

    · The ability to summarize and interpret collected fisheries, wildlife, and vegetation data.

    · Has the willingness to work closely with client, and Aboriginal partners

    · Work outside in adverse weather conditions

    · Proficient in backcountry navigation along with the ability to drive safely on forest service roads.

    · Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail; Excellent communication and technical writing skills, and

    · A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to learn

    · Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license (driving abstract required)

    · Participate in and adhere to, corporate and client safety program

Environmental Scientist / Aquatic and Wetland Specialist

    In this position as an Aquatic and Wetland Specialist you will be responsible for performing duties as a field representative, including instream construction monitoring; fish salvage and rescue; Fish habitat and population studies; Stream Classification; invasive weed surveys; wetland delineations; rare plant surveys; wildlife surveys; collecting field data and samples; monitoring construction sites for impacts on the aquatic environment, compiling data, and preparing reports.

    Specifically, you will:

    · Support or lead aquatic field work and assessments involving fish populations, fish salvage, benthic invertebrate communities, as well as water and sediment chemistry.

    · Conduct wetland delineations, jurisdictional determinations, and other aquatic resource surveys using current agency protocols, regionally specific methods, and other guidance.

    · Provide biological monitoring and oversight for construction projects, restoration and reclamation implementation and maintenance.

    · Research regional specific natural resources, survey requirements, and reporting needs.

    · Prepare technical reports documenting field investigations and analytical results.

    · Analyze and interpret collected field data.

    · Complete provincial loadform data submission for wildlife and fish survey inventories.

    · Experience working in aquatic ecology consulting in Canada with Electrofishing Certification

Junior Finance Manager

  • Part-Time (3 days/week ~24 hours)
    Location: St. Albert, AB
    Compensation: $30–$35/hour + comprehensive benefits

    Due to continuing growth, we are seeking a part-time Junior Finance Manager to join our team.

    Are you a motivated professional with strong financial and operational skills? Are you looking to contribute to meaningful work in a supportive, growth-oriented environment? Then this role may be for you.

    In this position as a Junior Finance Manager, you will:

    • Prepare accurate monthly financial reports and support budgeting and forecasting.

    • Manage finances and administration for a Joint Venture with a First Nations partner.

    • Provide grant administration support: track budgets, report expenses, and ensure compliance.

    • Support proposal preparation by ensuring cost estimates are accurate, budgets are well formatted, and billable hours are tracked.

    • Administer contracts and agreements: prepare service agreements, track deliverables, and monitor payments.

    • Process payroll and maintain the banked time system.

    • Enter and categorize expenses in QuickBooks and reconcile bank accounts monthly.

    • Prepare and send invoices, track payments, and liaise with clients regarding service agreements and deposits.

    • Provide operational support by refining workflows and ensuring financial data integrates with project management systems. Conduct plant and wildlife surveys for habitat assessments, special-status species, and other project requirements.
